Pickleball fundamentals:

Pickleball fundamentals:
(What we learned at Sarah Ansboury's clinic)

1. Who controls the net controls the point
- get up to the kitchen line as soon as possible
- put pressure on the opponents

2. Only one serve
- serve to opponents back hand, most opponents struggle more with their back hands
- only one serve, make sure it's in

3. Two bounce by serving team
- never give the point away on a return of serve, because then you're giving away your rule advantage
- return deep and not to the server
- use the middle to your advantage
- you can even lob and get up to the kitchen line, they are forced to let it bounce, use that to your advantage

4. 3rd shot drop
- learn to drop your 3rd shot in the kitchen from anywhere on the court, it neutralizes the two bounce rule advantage of the other team
- use the 3rd shot drop unless you have a clear winner shot

5. Dinking game
- opponents will likely dink the 3rd shot drop back over in the kitchen
- you are allowed to step into the kitchen to dink back a ball after the bounce
- keep dinks low over the net, in the kitchen, at the opponents feet and use angles
- look for opportunities, if they pop the ball up, put it away
- it's a chess match, be alert, let them make the first mistake
- breathe, track the ball with your paddle, stay grounded on the balls of your feet, like a tiger, and pounce when opportunity presents itself

6. Volley rallies
- on equally matched teams, the one who hits the first volley loses the point, more often than not
- catch the opponents off guard
